Breast Cancer: The Weight of the Unknown

Age:
Geographic Region:

First thing that came to my mind was overwhelm. Nobody told me the overwhelm part, and mine was from diagnosis to surgery was like just fast. The only not fast part was a three week… between the oncology and the breast surgeon, and one of the weeks I was gone. So the unknowns, nobody told me the weight of the unknowns and how overwhelming that would be, and that it felt so heavy at times that I felt like I was doing the really shallow breathing all the time.

That’s what I do when I’m sick. Like I don’t wanna throw up. So, I’ll just breathe real shallow. And I found myself like for six weeks not breathing. And it’s until you exhale that you’re like, ‘Oh snap. That was a lot.’ And I’m just four weeks post-surgery, and so I’m still learning all this ish and I… I appreciated what you said about people helping and the meal training and all the things.

Like, I spent two weeks not being able to do much of anything except take care of my own self. Going to the bathroom… like for two weeks I had to have help getting outta bed. I had to have help, everything. And I’m so used to… I’ve been single for 12 years. I’m not used to anybody helping me do stuff. I’m helping everybody else. So the overwhelm has been huge in all aspects.
