I was 33 when I had my first child. I was nervous about labor because I was born in a police car after a very quick labor and my grandmother also had very quick labors. My nervousness led to an overcorrection and I went to the hospital before full labor had begun. My labor stalled, I was induced, and 33 hours, 2 epidurals, a spinal, and some Demerol later I had a cesarean. I then hemorrhaged, had a blood transfusion, and five hours of surgery later the doctors saved my life and my uterus – for which I am very grateful.
It took us six years to have our second child. He came four weeks early after 2.5 hours of total labor – transition happening in the car on the way to the hospital.
Our third was born at home. Because our second came early and I had to wait until 36 weeks before someone would agree to my being at home. I was surrounded by family and friends and it was the best experience. I would recommend home birth to anyone but very few people have the courage to do it. it was my easiest recovery and the least stressful. I loved it and I am so glad I could have that experience after my first experience. It helped me see the full joy of birth.
